As the night wore on, Vince had come to the conclusion that neither Maggie nor Robert would show up. He tried calling them both but was unable to reach them. Vince didn’t have to be a brain surgeon to figure out what was going on. When he saw Maggie in the office with Robert, his mind had made wild accusations against them. Robert had made it clear to him that as long as Vince was stringing Emily along and not being honest with Maggie, then Maggie was fair game.

Vince stood beside Emily, who was talking to Burt Tolken, one of their top advertisers, about the work she had done with a charity organization. The more she spoke, the more faith clients lost in her ability. Maggie always shined in those settings. She knew how to ask the right questions, and before the conversation ended, A&Rt would have a new client or someone they could call on when needed. On top of that, Emily was snubbing the other women, which was something Maggie never did, even if the other woman snubbed her first.

Vince gave the room another once-over. Maybe Maggie was mingling in the crowds and he’d failed to see her. There were a lot of people present, standing around with cocktails in hand, chitchatting to unearth what the next person could do for him or her.

“Well, I’m sorry to hear Maggie’s moving on,” Burt said loudly enough to reclaim Vince’s attention.

Vince felt Emily tense up beside him. She was jealous of Maggie, and she had every reason to be.

“We are too,” he replied bitterly.

“Is she on the market?”

Wasn’t that a loaded question? Vince narrowed his eyes at Burt. Of course Burt wanted to schmooze Maggie; they all did. All night, it had been the same thing. He’d introduce Emily as their new Maggie, whomever he was talking to tested Emily’s ability, she failed royally, and they tried to seize the opportunity to bring Maggie into their fold. Business was always so fucking cutthroat.

“No, she isn’t,” Vince replied.

“I see,” Burt said as if he didn’t believe him.

“She’s working on a new venture.”

“Is that so?”

“She’s going into business for herself as an image consultant.”

Burt lifted a finger. “But she’s a consultant.”

“You need some image consulting, Burt?” Vince couldn’t control his snarl.

“I need the sort of consulting that Maggie provides. After all she’s proven to be able to put sinking ships back on the ocean.”

Vince snorted. Hell if Burt didn’t just take a shot at him.

“Excuse me,” Emily said and backed out of the conversation.

Burt watched her leave. He didn’t have to say a word. Vince already knew Burt was thinking Vince was a fool to separate himself from Maggie in more ways than one.

Burt bowed his head. “Excuse me.”

Vince took his cell phone out of his pocket and tried Maggie once again. The call went straight to voicemail. He listened to her say, “You’ve reached Maggie Conroy. Leave your name and your number, and I’ll return your call as soon as I can.
